Beginning Jazz

7 and under

The introductory level of jazz dance comprises uncomplicated movements that resonate with children and gradually progress into contemporary and modern dance routines. The objective is to reinforce the physical attributes of young dancers, namely their strength, agility and flexibility while fostering a positive environment that bolsters their self-esteem and encourages self-expression, as well as enjoyment of the art form.

Primary Jazz

Ages 7+

Upon your child’s acquisition of musicality and physical strength, enrolling them in Primary Jazz would be an impactful course to aid in their evolution of flexibility and technique and the broadening of their stylistic skillset for modern jazz dancing. The fusion of music and movement in jazz is characterized by an exuberant and rapid tempo, ideal for those who possess an expressive and dynamic disposition.

Trainee Modern

teacher placement

The Trainee Modern program integrates a dynamic syllabus of rhythmic dance that combines the latest modern forms with contemporary and lyrical styles. This multifaceted approach allows for continual evolution, ensuring relevance to the latest dance styles and forms. Students benefit from the development of their technical and musical skills, as well as honing their performance abilities. The curriculum also exposes trainees to improvisation and provides a comprehensive understanding of modern dance history.

Company Classes, Modern / Contemporary

teacher placement, experience required

Upon attaining a high level of modern and contemporary proficiency, one may aspire to audition for entry into the prestigious Company of the Indiana Ballet Theater (IBT). Under the astute guidance of Associate Artistic Director, Amanda Tuohy CDE, dancers are afforded the opportunity to acquire, develop and perform a diverse range of repertoire. At IBT, modern dance is presented as a study in both classical and contemporary methods, designed to fortify comprehension and aptitude in dance styles and forms such as Cunningham, Horton, Graham, release techniques, and improvisation skills. Instruction is principally provided by Amanda Tuohy and Christie Kamanaroff, both of whom bring extensive experience and a background in dance education at Columbia College Chicago to their students.
